Nursing Faculty Publish Midwifery and Women’s Health Test Prep Book with OTC Assistance

Faculty from Georgetown University’s Berkley School of Nursing (BSON) recently published a test prep book with assistance from the licensing team at Georgetown’s Office of Technology Commercialization.

The book, Georgetown Midwifery & WHNP Board Review supports midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner students and graduates in preparing for their national certification board exams so they can enter the workforce.

“This is us putting all our efforts forward to help grow and diversify the midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner workforce because we have big problems to solve when it comes to taking care of pregnant and postpartum individuals,” said Assistant Professor Heather Bradford, PhD, CNM, FACNM, lead editor of the book and Assistant Program Director with the Georgetown University BSON Nurse-Midwife (NM)/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) & WHNP Programs, as well as the Mary L. and Raymond T. Holden Endowed Professor in Maternal and Infant Health. “This book would not be possible without the help of our tremendous faculty and alumni who helped to write and edit over 700 test questions, as well as the leadership of Georgetown’s BSON and Georgetown University Medical Center. We are so grateful for their support and the Office of Technology Commercialization’s work to bring this book to the market, where it can make a difference.”

Two of the book’s editors, Heather Bradford and Melicia Escobar, at the ACNM Annual Meeting & Exhibition

Assistant Professors Katie Atkin, DNP, WHNP-BC, ANP-BC and Melicia Escobar, DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC, FACNM co-edited the book.

“We were so excited to see the success of this book and to support our faculty in making it a reality. OTC manages more than patents – we can use many intellectual property strategies to launch innovations and creations into the world as we did with this book.”

Midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner care are associated with a host of positive health outcomes for childbearing individuals, yet many people in the United States do not have access to these sexual and reproductive healthcare clinicians

Midwifery care in the US is underutilized and underfunded, and increasing access and integration of midwives can improve health equity and outcomes, according to the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), the national professional organization that represents certified nurse-midwives (CNMs).

CNMs are advanced practice registered nurses who specialize in primary, gynecologic, and reproductive healthcare, including pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care and care of newborns in their first month of life. They hold a master’s degree in nursing and/or a doctor of nursing practice degree, and are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Georgetown’s nationally ranked online dual NM/WHNP Program at the BSON prepares students for this certification.

Similarly, WHNPs specialize in primary, gynecologic, and reproductive healthcare, including pregnancy and postpartum care. They hold a master’s degree in nursing and/or a doctor of nursing practice degree, and are certified by the National Certification Corporation (NCC). Both NM/WHNP and WHNP Programs offer an innovative and robust health equity curriculum scaffolded throughout the specialty courses. Students learn trauma-informed, person-centered care that seeks to advance health equity, mitigate racism and biases, and provide structurally competent care.

Applying the Georgetown University value of cura personalis, the book prepares students for both the AMCB and NCC exams. It takes a holistic approach, with tips for study skills, time management, self-reflection and action steps for a successful study plan.

“This is such a gift to the profession,” said nursing dean Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, PMHCNS, ANEF, FADLN, FAAN. “I am so proud of our outstanding faculty on the publication of this book. This important resource not only supports students and graduates preparing for national certification exams, but also reflects the excellence and commitment of our Georgetown nursing community.”
