Funding Opportunity: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges family of initiatives fosters innovation to solve key health and development problems.  The Foundation is now accepting applications for three new Grand Challenges.

New Interventions for Global Health 
Focus on innovative concepts for vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics with the potential to be translated into safe, effective, affordable, and widely utilized interventions to protect against the acquisition, progression, or transmission of infectious disease, or to provide a cure for infectious diseases, in resource-limited settings.

Awards:   Up to $10,000,000 over 4 years; must include an industry, biotech, or other translational partner.  Such partner not required for Pilot awards up to $2,000,000 over 4 years.

For the following opportunities, grants will go to investigators in low- and middle-income countries, and partnerships are encouraged with investigators in other countries, especially where the opportunity exists to build on existing collaborations.

Awards:  $500,000-$2,500,000

Putting Women and Girls at the Center of Development
Focus on how to effectively reach and empower the most vulnerable women and girls to improve health and development – including economic – outcomes as well as gender equality. 

Creating and Measuring Integrated Solutions for Healthy Birth, Growth, and Development
Focus on new measurement tools and new combinations of approaches to ensure all children thrive and have the chance to live healthy productive lives. 

Timeline: Letter of Inquiry deadline: January 13, 2015
Full proposal deadline (if invited): June 2, 2015
