Section: News Items

The Patent Award Ceremony was held on January 31, 2011, at Lohrfink Auditorium. Dr. Claudia Stewart, Vice President for Technology Commercialization, welcomed all who attended and said, "We are not here to dissect what a patent or an invention is, rather we are here to gain awareness of their significance and potential and to learn about the strides Georgetown is making in technology commercialization."

The Office of Technology honored Georgetown faculty that were awarded US patents between the years 2007-2010, and honored several faculty, who made major contributions to preclinical and clinical innovations. Dr. Spiros Dimolitsas, Senior Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer, and Dr. Federoff, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean for the School of Medicine, also welcomed all faculty, staff and students. Drs. Levine and Schlegel and Sandberg were speakers and gave interesting and moving presentations.

Twenty-nine faculty members were awarded for their achievement. Over 100 faculty, staff and students attended the ceremony, which was followed by a wine and cheese reception.

The Office of Technology Commercialization at Georgetown University organized this ceremony to honor members of our University community who are inventors on United States Patents that issued between 2007 and 2010 and to recognize outstanding accomplishments and activities in technology transfer and commercialization. The efforts of our faculty are critical for commercialization success, which benefits our University and, more importantly, enables innovations to reach the public.

Please note that several inventors are named on multiple patents within the three year period and to keep the ceremony and its costs manageable, we are awarding only one patent plaque per year per individual. Also, we chose 2007 as the beginning boundary for this ceremony because that is the year the former Office of Technology Licensing was renamed The Office of Technology Commercialization, to connote the many functions involved in bringing inventions to the marketplace.
